The Big Idea

Shifting Stories is based on many years’ experience of coaching and facilitating, and also on ideas drawn from Narrative Therapy and other fields. (For more on this, see the blog post on Theoretical Links.) 

 

The central ideas are:

 

  • We all live our lives through stories: the way in which we interpret reality

  • We all have several stories available to us about any situation

  • We are subject to risks in our stories, such as confirmation bias and self-fulfilling prophecies

  • We can change unhelpful stories and replace them with more helpful ones.

 

In this model, there are three phases in shifting our own stories, or helping others to shift theirs:
